Open House Shenanigans: Tales from the Trenches

As a realtor, hosting open houses can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a source of some of the most amusing and unexpected stories. From the curious to the comical, here are a few tales from my open house adventures that will have you laughing.

First up, we have "The Snacker"

This person arrived at the open house and proceeded to help themself to the refreshments, and even going as far as making a sandwich with the provided spreads (croissants, meats, cheeses). They lingered for an hour, munching away, and it was clear they had no intention of buying the house, or any house, really.

Next, we have "The Professional Sleeper"

This person arrived at the open house and promptly made themselves comfortable on the couch, ultimately falling asleep in about 2 minutes. When I went to wake them up and asked if they had any questions about the property, they just mumbled something about how comfortable the couch was, and went back to snoozing. It took some coaxing to get them up and at-em, but eventually they deemed it best to nap at home and left.

Then, there's "The Ghost Hunter"

This person was convinced that the house was haunted, and spent the entire time walking around with a flashlight and a EMF detector. They even went as far as to say that they saw a ghost in one of the bedrooms, and wouldn't leave until I went in with them to check it out. I must admit, I was tempted to slam a door or flicker the lights from the switch, but in the end I couldn’t bring myself to indulge them.

And last but not least, we have "The Escape Artist."

This person came with their kids and let them run wild through the house, breaking things and causing chaos. At one point, one of the kids managed to escape out the back door and was found wandering the neighborhood by a neighbor who returned them to their oblivious parents, who were distracted by the rose garden out back.

I love that Open Houses can be a source of entertainment; you never know who's going to show up or what they're going to do. But at the end of the day, it's all in good fun, and it's all part of the job of being a realtor. So if you're thinking of hosting or attending an open house, be prepared for the unexpected, and keep a sense of humor.
